America The Great Cookbook
October 31, 2017 is the release date for America The Great Cookbook, a book that I am very honored and proud to be a small part of. Joe Yonan, the book’s editor (his day job is Food and Dining Editor of the Washington Post) asked me in the Spring of 2017 if I might consider contributing a pie recipe to this project. My immediate thought was “You bet,” but when I learned that a portion of the proceeds from the book would go to No Kid Hungry, well that sealed the deal right there. I would have given him ten had he the room!
I turned in my recipe, and a month later videographer Tim Harper, and photographer Lottie Hedley showed up at my door ready to get some photos and footage. In the short hours that they were at Pie Cottage, not only did they capture images and video of the pie, my four-legged family, and me, they also captured my heart as we sat at my table sharing our stories and eating pie. It was simply way too soon when they had to pack up and head on to their next location. The three of us could have talked for days.
Tim shared that he was just about ready to head back to his home in New Zealand the following week. When I learned that, I asked if he might have a wee bit of extra space to take a copy of Art of the Pie to two pie-makers who have a shop in Auckland. He asked me for the address, and said it sounded strangely familiar. A few text messages later he laughed and said that the pie shop is right next door to his sister’s office. How about that for a coincidence!?! Tim said he would definitely find room in his luggage for it.
When the three of us said goodbye it was no longer as strangers, but as new friends looking forward to the next time we all meet. Below is a short video about the project. You’ll even see me and Gretapie in it!
A week later I heard from my friends in New Zealand. True to his word, Tim had delivered Art of the Pie. They couldn’t believe it when he walked in with it for them. Talk about another great surprise!
If you are interested in supporting the great work that No Kid Hungry does, here’s a link so you can buy your very own copy of America The Great Cookbook. And Joe, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for the opportunity to fight hunger and feed kids.
