An Affordable 8 Burner, 2 Oven, Dual Fuel Range
Is there even such a thing? I’ve been on the fence about gas, electric, or dual fuel in baking. Propane is my only option where I am since natural gas is unavailable in my rural town. Propane is a wet heat, and over the last 30+ years, I’ve figured out how to use it and also the quirks of the ovens I’ve had that use it. But, I bake in a lot of ovens across the country, many of which are electric. I figured that since the hummy hum woes are now resolved, electric or dual fuel was the way I would go for my next stove.
Looking at new stoves is like going to a candy store for me. I get a thrill just checking out oven specs, like cubic footage and rack placement, like some do when they sit in a new car with leather seats at the dealer. But new cars drop in value as soon as they have driven around the block, and the price of new ovens can be daunting as you know.
Now enter a very good kitchen witch who was watching out for me yesterday.
I stopped by to say hello to my friends Jean and Roy who recently bought a one bedroom cabin near my old neighborhood in the foothills of the Olympics. Jean had just had a gorgeous new propane range delivered and had given the very clean and relatively new electric range that came with the cabin to a local thrift store in town.
“Darn it!”she said, when I told her I was looking for an electric model. “I would have given it to you had I known. The bake is perfect and very even.”
No problem. I went to the store first thing this morning, looked it over, and bought it on the spot. It was just delivered a few minutes ago, placed next to my propane model, and is heating up for its first baking session. Now, I will be able to test recipes with both gas and electric heat. Wheeeee!
And if that weren’t enough, I have basically turned my kitchen in to one that sports a dual fuel range with two ovens and eight burners… all for 150 bucks! How’s that for an easy and affordable solution!
You are lucky. I would not have a space in my kitchen to accommodate it. I am really happy that the thrift store still had it and you were able to get it.
Me too, Gary. It is in front of a door that I don’t use and is just the width of the stove. I am one happy camper. 🙂
So glad you can put the stove to good use! My only regret is, just think how many bottles of wine $150.00 could have purchased had I thought to call you first! Happy pie making, my friend.
You buy the wine. I’ll bring the pie, Jean!
