I’m still here…REALLY! I’m smack dab in my busiest time of the year. Fruit is spilling out everywhere, at farmers markets, on my neighbors’ trees and in their gardens, on my trees, and it’s not letting up! It’s almost a full time job keeping up with it but I know I will be happy I’ve muscled my way through it all when I pull out a bag of the sour cherries I pitted this weekend, and make a pie bursting with the flavor of summer in the short days of winter. I did make one already to take to a potluck this weekend.
Before I turned around, it was gone!
Last week I was teaching in Montana, this weekend I’m over the pond to teach in Seattle, and the following weekend I have a private workshop that has been set up in Chicago. I’ll be able to break away after it’s over to share a meal with Annie and Michael and catch up with what’s been going on in our lives. Every day I am grateful to them for bringing my sweet Gretapie into my life.
Now, here’s the news the update on the big project…the house next door.
There is asbestos in the kitchen ceiling! Not much, but enough that it will require folks who are specially trained to remove and dispose of it in the correct manner. What ever Chrysotile is, there is 2% of it in the ceiling mud tape, and if it had only been 1% less, it wouldn’t be an issue. But 2% is considered hazardous material.
Now, I am awaiting the bids of the appropriate firms so I can choose one and they can remove it. THEN the house will go bye bye and I’ll invite all my neighbors over for a big party!
Speaking of neighbors, Marilyn and Kerry, from up the block, came over with their riding mower and cut down the tall grass and dandelions which had gotten out of hand over there while we wait for the go ahead to tear down. Life in a small town is good, my friends.
P.S. Send good thoughts that the cost for the asbestos tape removal isn’t too high. If I could trade pie for the service, I’d be delighted.
P.P.S. Here’s the recipe for my very best cherry pie. 😉
Sour Cherry pie is my new favorite – I made one last summer and had no idea they were so good. I grew up with cherry orchards (Yakima) but not sour cherries. Wow!! Let us know when you are ready for a work party, Kate! Our work gloves are out and ready.
I grew up with sour cherry trees in my backyard and have very fond memories of sour cherry pie in the summertime. I love the cute little cherries on top!
Summer and sour cherry pie! What could be better, Kate. Here’s the link to my prize winning Best of Show Cherry Pie. 🙂
I always have Montmorency cherries in my freezer. I get them from Cherries Jubilee a small family business east of White Rock. She also grows morello cherries which are just amazing but this year early frost (or late forget which) destroyed the blossoms. 🙁
I like to use them in make pies and claflouti of course, but also Gateau Basque.
My mother in law had sour cherry trees and we always looked forward to visiting her in cherry season for her amazing pies.
Morellos are wonderful cherries. I bet you were devastated with their loss this year. I know I would have been.
