File this under: I Can’t Believe I Just Did That
The house is a mess. You don’t see that part in virtual book events and pie camps. This is the first time in my entire life that I have not had to worry about who is going to walk through the door, and if my house is presentable.
My mom was a piano teacher and the living room where she taught had to be tidy always. During the years that I taught piano it is the same, and during all the years of Pie Day Camps and Multi-Day Camps, ditto. Truly this IS the first time in my 67 years that I do not have to keep everything in tip-top shape, but I usually do keep it up anyway.
Of course it figures that the one day that I decide to sleep in and then read a book, instead of vacuuming Gretapie’s hair (a/k/a fibers of love which she has a lot of), is the day that I get a text message from a friend who has gone crabbing.
“I’ll drop some crab off. Cooked cleaned needs shelling.
Even though I am out on errand and won’t be back for an hour, I am not one to turn down that kind of offer.
I respond, “Yes, back door open. Sorry house is messy.”
When I get home, I find it in the fridge waiting for me. I make a dough and crack the crab.
So now, I have a crab and mushroom quiche in the oven…crustless because right after I made the filling, I remember that I need to parbake the dough in the pan before filling it and that just isn’t happening.
A few folks who are in our tiny Covid bubble are already over at my son’s house. He’s cooking. They’re cooking. I’m cooking and thinking of what my grandmother, Geeg, would say.
“Just put the filling in the pan and bake it. It will be fine.”
So that’s what I do. I take a deep swig of a nice red wine…even though my teatotalling grandmother wouldn’t have approved of that part.
And then…I see that I have forgotten to put the eggs in the quiche! So, channeling Geeg, I pull out the quiche, pour the fork beaten eggs on top, lighty mix them into the half and half, cheese, crab, peppers, and mushrooms with a fork, and close the oven back up.
Another sip? Oh most definitely yes.
My friend who kindly shared the crab texts, “Save me a piece.”
