THE NIGHT BEFORE PIE-BY
Tomorrow, Dec 25th, is National Pumpkin Pie Day and there will be a piece or two set out for Santa at Pie Cottage when I head to bed so he can keep his strength up as he makes his visits around the world tonight.
As some of you know, we have a little group over on Facebook for pie lovers. It was started by me and my good friend and pie sister, Catherine Gewertz, one night as we sat around her kitchen table. We wondered if we were to start a Facebook group for pie lovers, would anyone come. We decided to give a go, and named it Pie Nation. I guess we needn’t have worried if anyone would come as now there are over two thousand of us (and growing) in what has become a wonderful place where we share our love of pie and pie making. The only requirement for entry into the group is to answer one simple question. Pie or Cake? Some add more in their response, but a one word reply is all that’s needed….and yes, it is ok to answer both, Pie AND Cake.
To celebrate the season, one year a few of our members created a piemaker’s version of “The Night Before Christmas.” Today is December 24th, so it seems the perfect day to share it with you, too.
Many blessings to you and to all a good Yule night!
The Night Before Pie-By*
‘Twas the night before a Pie-By and all through the house
I was sifting and stirring with vast quantities of flour on face and blouse
Stockings were covered in Morello Cherry Juice
My dough making skills, graceful as a moose
The pie discs were wrapped snugly in their cold little beds
While visions of cherries and almond extract danced in their heads
I took off my apron and then my chef’s cap
And sat on the couch for a dough-chilling catnap.
When suddenly I awoke to hear such a clatter
I ran into the kitchen to see what was the matter
The light in the oven of the cleaned up kitchen
Gave a wonder of awe to all who were bitchin
when what to my wondering eyes should appear
but a family all dressed in holiday attire
with forks in hand and my pies in their grip
I knew in a moment their would be nothing left
More rapid than reindeer the pie eaters came,
They whistled, and shouted, they requested by name:
“We want Pecan! And, Pumpkin! Next Apple and Cherry!
Yes, Lemon! Yes, Key Lime! Yes, MarionBerry!
I couldn’t believe it! They continued to Call!
Then eat away! eat away! eat away all!”
And then they exclaimed as they drove out of sight.. The best pie was had on this cold Christmas night!
