Racking Up the Spices
I got tired of flipping through various little plastic spice bags in a box on the counter to find the one I need when I’m in the middle of cooking. So I spent this morning racking up the spices. Some were already in jars on the homemade unit that Duncan had made for a house he lived in during college years. But I just had too many to put on the shelves resulting in the plastic bag spill over. Everything was sort of neatly organized alphabetically. I learned that trick worked well for me decades ago. But, I wanted the bags off of that counter, and since I don’t have a lot of counter space, what I do have I guard jealously.
I washed up all the likely jars (I am somewhat of a jar collector. You too?), bought some new canning lids at the general store, and set to work. I was able to consolidate doubles and triples. There was even one quadruple. We do use a lot of cumin. 😉 I marked the top of each lid with a purple sharpie. It’s the color that was closest at hand. Then I racked them all up again in alphabetical order. There are a few like Saigon cinnamon and nutmeg that are in my pie supply cupboard in larger amounts, but on the whole I was able to fit everything on the three racks. With the lids up it made it hard to see what I had written on top, so I solved that little problem by laying them down on their sides. Now, I can read what is in them. I do see that I spelled marjoram wrong, but you won’t tell will you?
I may get some white stick on labels for the tops but right now I kinda like the hodgepodge look of it all and will probably just keep it as it is. The total cost of my project was less than two dollars—the price of the new lids.
I had a really good time doing this and just look at all the counter space I have now! (I know. I know. I am soooo easily amused.)
